Thursday Thirteen: 13 Writing Books to Read in 2014

Thursday Thirteen is a weekly meme with a simple theme: each Thursday you blog a list of 13 things. What kind of things? Any kind! Just come up with a list theme and run with it.

This year, I really want to bone up on some writing skills. I want to find better outlining methods, learn more about the psychology behind stories, and much more! So today, here's a list of the writing books that I would like to read and utilize this year! First I'll go over the ones I own, then the ones I plan to purchase.

1. Wired for Story by Lisa Cron - Owned
2. Outlining Your Novel by K.M. Weiland - Owned
3. Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Brown and Dave King - Owned
4. Goal, Motivation, Conflict by Debra Dixon - Owned
5. Writing Magic by Gail Carson Levine - Owned
6. Write Every Day by Cathy Yardley - Owned
7. Rock Your Plot by Cathy Yardley - Owned
8. Tips for Authors by Alice Anderson - Owned
9. Structuring Your Novel by K.M. Weiland - Not owned
10. On Writer's Block by Victoria Nelson - Not owned
11. The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman - Not owned
12. The Negative Trait Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman - Not owned
13. The Positive Trait Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman - Not owned

Well, there they are! Books I have and books on my wish list that I can add to my Writer's Toolbox. Any writers out there with other favorites or recommendations? I'd very much like to hear about them!

I have read Writing Magic, it has some interesting advice. It seemed especially good for younger writers.

I have a lot of these, but some like Wired for Story I've never hear of. I will check it out. Thanks for the tips. :)I'm always looking for something to help me hone my craft.

@CountryDew - It is definitely geared towards younger writers, but I feel like the advice in it is helpful no matter how old I am. Plus, sometimes it helps to keep it a little simpler.

@Mia Celeste - Hey there! *grins* Are we long lost sisters? ;) Wired for Story was recommended to me by another author, and I couldn't resist getting my own copy! Happy to add to another author's toolbox!

@Dakota Trace - Thanks Dakota! I deeply appreciate your recommendation of Goal, Motivation, Conflict! It's a life-changer, for sure. I hope you enjoy some of the titles on here you might not yet have!

That reminds me. I loaned my copy of GMC out. I better get it back, even though I've already read it. There's someone else I think needs to see it.

@Alice Audrey - Oh boy! Yeah, it could always use another read, I'm finding, and sharing the love makes you a really good friend. It's fantastic, and has created a paradigm shift in how I interpret everything I watch/read/write.

Thanks so much for commenting! :)

I'm surprised as a writer myself that I've never heard of these. I will definitely have to check them out. Thank you for the heads up and happy Thursday!

@Stephanie Sullivan - I know! There are so many books I didn't even realize were out there before I made my New Year's resolution. For many of them, I first found one, and then through the magic of Amazon suggestions and research found the others.

Thank you so much for dropping by!

I plan to write more this year too and I need to read some writing books! I'm starting with Writing Down The Bones by Natalie Goldberg which I've had for years but never done more than glance at bits briefly. I've not heard of any of the ones you mention here so I might check some of them out.

@Emma - Awesome! So we both have similar goals this year. *comrades in writing* I'll look up Writing Down the Bones for my own writing toolbox! Thanks for the rec, and I hope some of my suggestions prove helpful.

Thanks for stopping by!
